The Future Of Solar Power
He is faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive, and able to leap tall buildings in a single bound-but where does Superman get his superhuman powers? It's a simple answer: the sun. His race survived on Krypton using only the light emitted by their weak red star. When he arrived on earth under our bright yellow sun, he realized the tremendous power it gave him. While most people cannot tap into the sun like this, humans have developed ways to power their lives using the sun's free energy. Scientists are develping new and efficient ways to tap into this immense source of energy. As prices of non-renewable resources such as natural gas, oil, and coal tend to head skyward, the benefits of developing alternative forms of electricity generation are becoming clear. Renewable solar energy has the potential to curb the nation's dependance on carbon-fueled power. Over the next 30 years, the generating power of the sun will be realized through solar photovoltaic cells and water heaters in homes, solar thermal collectors for utility scale electrical generation, and eventually extensive, space-based solar arrays that beam electricity down to earth.
Solar power has its disadvantages. First, sunlight is not constant. Solar power works best when the sun's rays shine directly at the collector. This is dependent on location, time of day, time of year, and weather. Second, the sun's energy is spread out, thus, to gather a useful amount requires a lot of space (Renewable Energy). Third, current solar technologies are not efficient enough to compete with standard electrical generation using fossil fuels. The best PV panels convert only 15-20% of available energy into electricity. Finally, solar generally requires a large initial investment to install. Current PV panel systems cost about $9 per watt. This means to install a system on an average home costs anywhere from $20, 000 to $30, 000 (Aldous). The real challenge for solar power in today's market is overcoming these weaknesses. Still, solar power does have its distinct advantages. First, solar power is usable almost anywhere because the sun shines almost everywhere. Second, it has almost zero negative effects on the environment. Also, solar energy is renewable and will never run out. In the case of PV panels, sunlight is converted directly to electricity meaning no loud, bulky mechanical generator (Renewable Energy). Finally, solar power is usually "load following." When the grid requires a lot of energy is typically when solar power solutions work the best. For example, on bright, hot days when people turn on the A/C, solar systems work the best (Potential of Solar). By Mark Hagge -|
