How To Find Old Oil Tanks For Metal Recycling
Metal recycling is quickly becoming an up and coming avenue to a second income in most rural households. Metal Recycling plants are located all over the United States, and their yearly revenue is quite large. Most "scrappers", as they are called, learn the trade from another metal recycler, by partnering with them for awhile. Then there are those who use the internet to learn the business, these are the people that these tips are meant to assist.
Scrappers make most of their money by Recycling metal, heavy amounts that frequently exceed a ton. One item that is in high demand is old oil tanks, as they provide a good amount of metal weight to their daily load. So how would one go about finding an old oil tank? There are a few ways as I will explain. The first avenue is your local plumbing and heating supplier. They usually have the hard job of disposing old oil tanks from homes after replacing the current heating system or tank. Visiting your local suppliers and giving them either a business card, or just your name and phone number is the best way to get those tanks. These suppliers are more than happy to let you do their dirty work. I actually know scrappers who have been smart enough to add a twenty dollar fee for pick up. Considering the money they get for the tank and the fee, it's not a bad day's pay. The next way to get that old oil tank is the "old fashioned way". Get into your truck and search your local supplier yards for old oil tanks located near their dumpsters. But remember, it is still the supplier's property, and you will need to get verbal permission to take the tank. Another tip, never remove tanks from their dumpsters, there is a liability issue here, and you can be arrested for doing this. Gain a good enough relationship with a supplier, and they will make an area where they store the tanks for weekly pick up by you. Word of mouth works well in the residential domain, make all of your family and friends aware that you will take any old oil tanks that they have, and any metal as well. You may get a few calls a month from them. Lastly, when cruising in your truck, if you see a supplier in the driveway of a residential home, pop in and ask if they have a tank for you to remove. They are usually more than happy to let you lift and dispose of the tank. Sometimes they will continue to call you after that for more removals. Finally remember you cannot bring your tank to the recycling plant with oil still in it. You must drill the bottom of the tank and drain the old oil.
